The Hobbit: The Musical Already In The Works?

This weekend, I decided to avoid the shopping madness, so I mostly stayed home and enjoyed time with the family. I did happen to catch a movie in the cinema, however, and as the credits rolled, I noticed the name of a familiar elf. Bret McKenzie, who will play Lindir in the upcoming Hobbit films (though you may know him because of his “Figwit” notoriety), wrote a few of the musical numbers for The Muppet movie.

His talents will come as no surprise to fans of the musical duo, Flight of the Conchords. McKenzie said of one of his Hobbit castmates, “Ian McKellen, it turns out, is a big fan of Flight of the Conchords.” He joked that he, McKellen, and Hugo Weaving, who will play Elrond, are collaborating on a re-telling of Tolkien’s classic tale. “We had a bit of downtime on set,” McKenzie said, “so we started workshopping The Hobbit: The Musical. We came up with some pretty good stuff.”

I’m almost certain he’s joking, but he does have experience with lyrics that “make you feel like you’re three-foot tall.” Sounds perfect for a story about a hobbit!
