Walking into Mordor – Google Directions

As the lead web developer for the Middle-earth News I don’t often get time to post articles, so this is a nice treat for me!
A big Hello and Thank you to Curtis Williams and Stephen Richmond for telling me about this. It made my evening, and my hope is it will do the same for all of the readers out there.

Like many people today, its not uncommon for me to use Google Maps to look up directions before talking out my front door – but it would seem Google has taken the time to caution us just in case we might do so without the proper knowledge.

Step 1: Navigate to Google Maps

Navigate to Google Maps by clicking the link above.

Step 2: Set your Journey

In the search bar enter, “The Shire to Mordor” and hit Enter.

Step 3: Simply Walk

Off course when traveling to Mordor, it would be most efficient to walk… right?
Select the Walking Directions icon.

Step 4: Use Caution

Notice that Google has taken the time to notify you that “One does not simply walk into Mordor”.

We hope you enjoy this as much as we did!
If you find any other Easter Egg Tolkien treasures, feel free to submit them using the “Got News Precious” link in the sidebar.

  1. Fun–I tried it and it worked! 🙂

If any Google developers are reading this I have a suggestion. Do one from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, and add the warning This Route has Trolls.
