Monster Magic at Waikato Museum

The secrets of animatronics are revealed at the How to Make a Monster, the art and technology of animatronics exhibition which comes to the Waikato Museum, New Zealand, in February according to YAHOO! 7News.

This interactive exhibition has been created by John Cox’s Creature Workshop, the Australian creature effects company.  On display are the different stages of monster development for the film industry from scripting, to creature design and mechanics, along with the chance to try some techniques like stop-motion animation.

As part of the exhibition there are talks by John Cox himself and Sam Doyle from Weta Digital about the secrets of animatronics, how it has evolved and how they got into the industry.   John Cox has been in the industry for 35 years and won an Academy Award for Visual Effects in 1995 for the film Babe. Sam Doyle is a texture and look development artist and surfacing technical director. He has worked on films such as Avatar, Xmen, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Tin Tin.

The exhibition is on display from 25 February until 15 July 2012.
