Nicolas Cage Could Have Been in “The Lord of the Rings”

Nicolas Cage at Empire Magazine

While doing press for his upcoming sequel to “Ghost Rider,” Nicolas Cage participated in a webchat with Empire Magazine readers. Normally, this is not the sort of thing that would stir the Tolkien community or Middle-earth News, but one of his answers has us buzzing.

Here is the webchat excerpt that aroused such curiousity:

terrence green says: I’m sure you have turned down films in the past, but is there one that you have thought “Damn, I wish I took it…”?

The only reason why I tend to pass on a movie is either I don’t think I’m right for the material and can’t play it honestly, or because of time constraints with personal things in my life. There were two movies that asked me to go to Australia or New Zealand for long periods of time. One was Lord Of The Rings and one was the Matrix. But I was actively involved at that time raising my family and I couldn’t really take that time out.

Can you imagine Nicolas Cage in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy? Which role would you guess he was up for?

  1. Are you stupid? says:

It says on the Wikipedia page for the movies that he was up for the role of Aragorn.

  2. Thank you, Lord, that Nick Cage was not in the Lord of the Rings…

  3. I dunno, Cage is a phenomenal actor. Just because we haven’t seen him in any similar roles, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have been spectacular. We’re just so ingrained with who we’ve seen with the roles… who knows what could have been?

    • I think he is a hack. But that is just me. 🙂 In the last 15 years or so he has been virtually identical in every role he’s been in.

  4. Thank you Lord…
    Thank you for sparing me.

I agree, thank the Lord. Nicholas Cage in LOTR would have made this an imperfect cast. Haha.
