Swiss Spa Town Overtaken by Tolkien Fans

The residents of Leukerbad, Switzerland, are knee-deep in Middle-earth festival attendees today. This weekend marks the sixth Middle-earth Festival since 2001, an event that was brought back due to popular demand after its last occurrence in 2005. “Popular demand” may be an understatement; the festival’s 1500 participants snatched up the tickets in a matter of minutes when they went on sale last October.

The four-day extragavanza, which ends Sunday, includes all kinds of activities for its costumed participants. Workshops are being held on things like fiber arts and archery. The standard Renaissance-fair-esque goings-on can be counted on, of course: juggling, tumbling,  jousting, and a parade through Leukerbad. This evening there will be a Hobbit dinner with medieval-style food, and tomorrow the festival will conclude with a firework display.

See the Middle-earth Festival 2012 site (in German) for more details and photos. And raise a glass to our fellow fans who are having a blast in Switzerland this weekend!
