An Eagle’s View of Middle-earth

In a past “Eagle’s View” post, we showed you a LEGO Helm’s Deep that put the official set set to shame. This LEGO reproduction of Rivendell by Blake Baer and Jack Bittner will take your breath away. (Lily Milos)

  • Do you ever wonder how the story of The Lord of the Rings would sound if written by another author? Luckily, Alison Brooks has compiled a list of Alternative Authors’ Versions of Lord of the Rings. She includes excerpts from authors like Lewis Carroll, George Lucas, A.A. Milne, Gene Rodenbury, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. (Oloriel)
  • Actor James Nesbitt may have spent the better part of the last couple of years in New Zealand filming The Hobbit, but he calls Ireland home. ITV1 will produce an eight-part series titled, “James Nesbitt’s Ireland,” in which Nesbitt will travel the country, visiting the people and the iconic (and the obscure) landmarks. (Evie Bowman)

Come on down to the Baggins’ Pawn Shop, family-owned since the end of the Third Age! You’ll find the best prices on Middle-earth trinkets, mathoms, and novelties. At the very least, you’ll have to pick up a t-shirt. (Bandoras)

  • As a boy, Rayner Unwin helped convince his father to publish The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. When he joined his family’s publishing firm, he helped to publish The Lord of the Rings, as well as the Roald Dahl classics Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. Limes Cottage, the home where he entertained writers, including Tolkien and Dahl, is now for sale. (Lily Milos)
  • Though cinema owners will have to upgrade their equipment to show The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at 48 frames-per-second, they don’t plan to charge higher prices for the tickets. However, since the film will only be shown at 48fps in its 3D form, expect to pay the usual 3D price. (Evie Bowman)

Attendees at Gen Con and Return of the Ring got a chance to see The Fellows Hip: Rise of the Gamers, and there will be another screening this Saturday, September 1, at Dragon*Con. The story is a modern day quest that pays homage to The Lord of the Rings, while exploring geek culture and finding a little geek and hero in all of us. (Rifflo)
