An Eagle’s View of Middle-earth

  • Benedict Cumberbatch, who will play Smaug (and the Necromancer) in The Hobbit, impressed his father by landing the role. He said, “It was the first ever story that I properly remember and my dad used to do all the characters when he was reading it. Such fantastic memories.   • National Geographic has announced a new television special called Dragon Wars: Fire and Fury that will use “CGI and live action used to illustrate dragon folklore.”  Executive producer Kevin Mohs said,  “With the upcoming release of The Hobbit, the fascination with the folklore of this time continues — in fact, many of these ancient Norse and Anglo-Saxon folktales were the inspiration for The Lord of the Rings trilogy.” (Evie Bowman)
  • Apparently, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King holds the record for the highest body count in any movie. And that doesn’t count horses, Fell Beasts, Mûmakil, or fish eaten by Gollum. (Lily Milos)
