Hobbit Stamps and Coins are “Wizard”

Last month we reported that New Zealand Post was releasing commemorative stamps and coins of The Hobbit and now, with pre-orders available, we can see what they look like.

There are individual stamps and coins of Gandalf, Bilbo, Thorin, Radagast, Elrond and, of course, Gollum.  The $1 coin is of Thorin with three of the dwarves, Bofur, Bombur and Bifur on the flip side.

When TVNZ talked Sir Ian McKellen, who is reprising his role as Gandalf for the films, about the coins and stamps he said,

“To put Gandalf on these splendiferous coins is a wizard idea,”

He was impressed with the Gandalf stamp saying: “The pointy hat, the beard and the illuminated staff – the $1.90 NZ stamp is pure Gandalf.”

You can see the stamps and coins  on the TVNZ photogallery . They’re available for pre-order from New Zealand Post.  Prices range from $11.40 for a set of stamps to $10,995 for the premium gold coin set!
