An Eagle’s View of Middle-earth

Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Italy will be holding a free Tolkien art exhibition from November 1-4. On display will be paintings, drawings, sculptures, and collectibles from The Greisinger Middle Earth Collection. Visitors can expect to see art from Chris Achilleos, Cor Blok, Brothers Hildebrandt, Donato Giancola, Roger Garland, Stephen Hickman, Tim Kirk, Alan Lee, Rodney Matthews, Ian Miller, Angelo Montanini, Ted Nasmith, David Wenzel, and many others. Actor Jim Beaver, who played “Bobby Singer” on the television show Supernatural, tweeted that he filmed a cameo for The Hobbit movies. Hollywood seems to be lining up for Hobbit cameos; it was recently confirmed that Stephen Colbert also visited the set for a small role. (Evie Bowman)

Azuza Pacific University is currently hosting an exhibit entitled, “I am in fact a hobbit,” to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit. The university has a special collection devoted to the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien and the Inklings, and the exhibit features editions of The Hobbit, selected artwork, and scholarly studies on Middle-earth.  The exhibit will run through January 30, 2012. (Evie Bowman)

Author (and self-proclaimed geek) Noble Smith has compiled 14 Things You May Not Know About ‘The Hobbit’ from The Complete Tolkien Companion by J.E.A. Tyler. Smith has also published an excerpt from his upcoming book, The Wisdom of the Shire, that will be released on October 30. In How To Tweet Like A Hobbit, Smith wonders whether Tolkien, who was “into old fashioned, honest to goodness social intercourse” would join the likes of Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, and Stephen Fry on Twitter.
