Hobbit fans won’t have to wait much longer before they can watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in their homes! The theatrical version of the film will be released  in the United States as a digital download on March 12, and the 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack ($35.99), the 5-Disc Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack ($44.95), and the 2-Disc DVD Special Edition ($28.98) will hit retailers on March 19.

(For UK release dates, see our article UK Hobbit Fans To Wait Until April 8th for Blu-ray, DVD And Digital Download Release)

The extended edition of the film is promised to be released in time for the 2013 holiday season, with most fans expecting it in October. So why would you want to buy this version instead of waiting? The Blu-ray and DVD versions will include a special code that will give you access to a LIVE Sneak Peek of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, presented by Peter Jackson! Visit for more details.

The Special Features, including 130 minutes of bonus content, will be available on all three Blu-ray and DVD options. Admittedly, most (if not all) of this content is already available online.

What do you think? Will you spring for this early release to get a peak at The Desolation of Smaug or will you hold out for the Extended Editions?

  1. As much as I want to get the DVD for the early release, I’m going to hold out for the Extended Edition. I bought regular Fellowship and Extended Fellowship and still rather regret that.

  2. ugh. I too bought the Fellowship of the Ring theatrical version and then later got all 3 extended editions. I don’t know if I can wait TIL OCTOBER for the Hobbit tho…*sigh* I really do not mind spending the extra money because it’s worth it….and the first installed of LOTR held me over until the extended edition of Return of the King came out so…. But then again, my personal favorite of the LOTR trilogy IS Fellowship of the Ring and every time I only have time to watch 1 installment, I always grab FotR anyway. I have a strong feeling this will not be the case with the Hobbit trilogy.

I also bought the regular and the extended versions. I still keep the theatrical versions because they have different content. So I will definitely be buying the theatrical version of The Hobbit too. Can’t wait.

  5. I will buy the 3/19/2013 DVD (the date is circled in red on my calendar) AND the extended set when it is available in Oct. (or whenever). I did this with all 3 LOTR DVD sets. As a previous commenter noted, there are different extras with each set. And sometimes I don’t want to spend the extra time watching the extended DVD version of which-ever movie I’m in the mood to revisit. But the main reason I will buy H1AUJ is because I can’t freaking wait to see it again! & Knowing (thanks to you) that it contains a sneak peek of H2DOS just makes me want it more!

  6. What about uk fans? How will they get to see the sneak peek? DVD release date seems to suggest April
