Frodo Won’t Appear in The Hobbit Sequels

tumblr_mdc8aiyoX11qcg02vo1_r1_500We were lucky enough to see Elijah Wood in the opening sequence of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We saw a still-carefree young Frodo living with his beloved Bilbo, who went, book in a hand, to wait for Gandalf along the road. So The Hobbit started where The Lord of the Rings started, bringing us tons of memories and explaining to new audiences how the two stories were connected.

Unfortunately we won’t see Frodo again in the upcoming sequels, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Elijah Wood has just revealed this to i am Rogue magazine:

“[…] obviously Frodo isn’t alive during the time period of The Hobbit, so it was a way mainly to get old Bilbo to tell his story as a conduit for what the storytelling of The Hobbit is.”

When asked if we could expect a final scene about Frodo during the third movie, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, as connection to The Lord of the Rings, Elijah Wood was clear:

“Not to the best of my knowledge, no”

So, we’ll just have to focus on Bilbo’s journey through many pitfalls and inhospitable lands, far away from the comfort of Bag End.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will open in theaters on December 13th.
