Oloris Publishing Press Release:

Oloris Publishing is pleased to announce the release of a video by artist/photographer John Cockshaw for his book Wrath, Ruin and a Red Nightfall. This lavish art book is scheduled for release in 2014, but a sneak peek is available now by way of the film.

Cockshaw takes the viewer on a tour of the areas that were his inspiration, the fruition of an almost decade-long photography and digital media project. Photographed landscapes crossfade into works of art throughout the book, as seen in a segment depicting tree herders in “The Dreams of Trees Unfold.”

Wrath, Ruin and a Red Nightfall undeniably refers to the forbidding elements and the menacing aspect of Middle-earth,” says Cockshaw in the film, “but this is also offset against the idea of ‘home.’”

The collection is comprised of photography based artwork that utilizes landscape, macro, and architectural photography gathered from extensive location scouting to depict evocative scenes and the dramatic geography of Middle-earth. This original work establishes a style that alludes to both film cinematography and painterly illustration. Informed by J. R. R.Tolkien’s descriptions of landscape, renowned illustrators Alan Lee and John Howe, as well as aspects of the Peter Jackson film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and Howard Shore’s epic film score, the collection focuses on Middle-earth as a living, breathing character — rooting it in the real and believable, yet suggestive of the fantastical at the heart of this grand mythology.

The five-minute film includes the artist reading poetry, exploring the woods in search of Ents, and provides enticing peeks of several pieces of his art. All the while  dramatic music provided by AKM Music plays in the background, enhancing the film experience.

The video can be viewed on Youtube and Vimeo.

About the artist:

As an artist and fan of Tolkien, he set out to create a collection of original artwork inspired by the extensive mythology of Middle-earth as found within  The Lord of the Rings and the author’s wider “It’s realism that sits comfortably alongside the fantastic and the forbidding.”
