Year 2941 – The Hobbit

September 21

  • Bilbo and the Dwarves escape (from Thranduil’s Hall) in the afternoon

September 22

  • Bilbo and the barrels reach Lake-town just after sunset

The evening meal had been taken to the prisoners. The guards were tramping away down the passages taking the torch-light with them and leaving everything in darkness. Then Bilbo heard the king’s butler bidding the chief of the guards good-night.
“Now come with me,” he said, “and taste the new wine that has just come in. I shall be hard at work tonight clearing the cellars of the empty wood, so let us have a drink first to help the labour.”
“Very good,” laughed the chief of the guards. “I’ll taste with you, and see if it is fit for the king’s table. There is a feast tonight and it would not do to send up poor stuff!”

 Year 3018 – The Lord of the Rings

September 18

  • Gandalf escapes from Orthanc in the early hours
  • The Black Riders cross the fords of Isen

September 19

  • Gandalf comes to Edoras as a beggar, and is refused admittance

September 20

  • Gandalf gains entrance to Edoras

September 21

  • Gandalf meets Shadowfax

  • The Black Riders reach Sarn Ford at evening; they drive off the guard of Rangers
  • Gandalf overtakes Shadowfax

  • They (the Travellers) return to Rivendell
  • Saruman comes to the Shire

 

Year 3021 – The Lord of the Rings

September 21

  • Frodo and Samwise set out from Hobbiton

 

Year 3082 – The Lord of the Rings

September 22

  • Sam leaves for the Heavens

On September 22 Master Samwise rides out from Bag End. He comes to the Towe Hills, and is last seen by Elanor, to whom he gives the Red Book afterwards jept by the Fairbairns. Among them the tradition is handed down from Elanor that Samwise passed the Towers, and went to the Grey Havens, and passed over Sea, last of the Ring-bearers.
