Giant Eagles Spotted at Wellington Airport

At last the mystery is over. Two giant eagles have joined Gollum at Wellington Airport as part of the celebrations for the world premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in Los Angeles today.

The eagles are suspended from the ceiling to look like they are flying overhead. One of them is carrying Gandalf.  The models took three months to build and each has a 15 metre wingspan and weighs a tonne according to New Zealand Herald.

You can find out more about the construction of the eagles in this video of the unveiling speech by Sir Richard Taylor, Weta Workshop co-founder.

The model of Gollum was installed in Wellington Airport last year at the time of the world premiere of  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
