Philippa Boyens, co-writer and producer of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, certainly has an inside track on what fans can expect of The Hobbit: There and Back Again, to be released in December 2014.

Empire Online recently reported remarks that Boyens made while publicizing the upcoming DVD release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Boyens noted that The Hobbit: There and Back Again doesn’t actually exist yet, since director Peter Jackson is still in the process of cutting the film, although the film and the performances within it do have rough shapes at this point. Boyens expressed excitement about the storyline in The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and called Richard Armitage’s performance in the third film “extraordinary.”

When asked about the cliff-hanger ending to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Boyens explained that time point as a “natural break” in the story, expressing her own surprise that audiences were so shocked by the ending. She explained that the approaching events in the story are huge and require a lot of storytelling, and the tone of the third film will move toward the darker Middle-earth that we see in The Lord of the Rings. Boyens also explained the dwarves’ decision to split up in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as a way for the audience to experience what happens in Lake-town through the eyes of characters that the viewers have come a long way with.
