The Daily Mail reported today that Martin Freeman will take to the London stage this summer as Richard III, the actor’s first Shakespearean role. Freeman reportedly made a pact with Benedict Cumberbatch about playing Shakespeare. Cumberbatch will make his own Shakespearean appearance in August 2015 as Hamlet (Middle-earth News story here).

Most of Freeman’s fans are more familiar with his work from television (The Office, Sherlock) and film (Love Actually, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Hobbit films) than stage. However, Martin Freeman is no stranger to live theatre, having appeared on stage most recently at the Royal Court in Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris.

Freeman begins rehearsals for Richard III in May or June. The show will begin performances in July, and run until September. Tickets for the show are expected to go on sale in the next week to ten days. Director Jamie Lloyd, of Jamie Lloyd Productions, performing under the banner of Trafalgar Transformed, is still in the process of casting other roles for the play.
