An Eagle’s View of Middle-earth – May 31, 2014

BagEnd_cake_dashandapinchEver since Sarah from A Dash and a Pinch started making big old fondant cakes, she had this idea in the back of her mind: She wanted to make Bag End. It was the most intricate, detailed, challenging cake she’s ever dared to make, put all of her hard work paid off. This cake is amazing, down to the tiny vegetables in the garden and the hair on Bilbo’s (not pictured) feet! (spotted by Middle-earth News reporter Lily via an awesome friend!)

In Tolkien in Pawneeland, author Roger Echo-Hawk argues that J.R.R. Tolkien consulted Skidi Pawnee texts in the course of creating his Middle-earth legendarium. He concludes in his book that Tolkien’s interest in Pawnee myth was sporadic and that The Professor consulted a 1904 book by George A. Dorsey titled Traditions of the Skidi Pawnee. In this blog post, he seeks to explain the basis of his argument. Give it a read and if you want to learn more, make sure to check out the full book, Tolkien In Pawneeland! In this absolutely incredible bit of film, Professor Tolkien walks about the buildings of Oxford chatting with the interviewer about his love of trees! This episode of the BBC Series ”In Their Own Words: British Authors” featured Professor Tolkien at the age of 76. (spotted by Middle-earth News reporter Valdis via The Land of Shadow)
