Steven Moffat told SFX Magazine recently that Lord of the Rings and Hobbit director Peter Jackson will probably direct an episode of Doctor Who at some point. Moffat, Doctor Who showrunner, said in the interview with SFX that Jackson was still very interested in the project, but the director’s commitments with The Hobbit have prevented him from taking the controls of the TARDIS.

Jackson is a well-known fan of Doctor Who. Talk of a Jackson-directed Series 8 episode of Doctor Who circulated earlier this year (you can find the Middle-earth News story here). Moffat addressed the issue of Jackson’s directing a Doctor Who episode in the interview with SFX:

“He’s still incredibly busy on The Hobbit. I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one. He accepts that there’s no money and that there’s no time, and it would have to be when he’s available – and I don’t think he’s even been available enough to answer our emails of late! I think it will probably happen at some point.”

Scheduling is clearly a major problem, with the new series of Doctor Who set to debut on August 23, 2014, and the final Hobbit film still nearly five months away. Moffat also mentioned to SFX that Jackson probably wants to make the episode in New Zealand, but that Moffat would prefer to bring Jackson to Wales, where Doctor Who is produced.

SFX Issue 251 has the complete interview with Steven Moffat,  along with a look at the upcoming Doctor Who series.
