Happy Birthday, Evangeline Lilly!

Evangeline is best known to Tolkien’s fans for her role as Tauriel the Elf in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy.

Evangeline Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta, Canada in 1979. She was raised in British Columbia, where she was spotted by the Ford Modeling Agency, who offered to put her on their books. Evangeline didn’t immediately pursue acting, however, eventually she called the agency, and so her acting career began, starting with several roles in commercials and non-speaking parts in the TV shows, like Smallville and Kingdom Hospital.

After those initial appearances, Evangeline decided to put aside her acting career and focus on her studies. Then a friend persuaded her to give acting another go, and soon she was cast as Kate Austen in ABC’s Lost. The TV series aired from 2004 to 2010 and gave Evangeline international fame. During these years, she also starred in other films: The Hurt Locker, Afterwards, and Real Steel.

In December 2013, Evangeline appeared for the first time as the Woodland Elf Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. That same year, she presented her first children’s book, The Squickerwonkers, at San Diego Comic Con. The book was illustrated by Johnny Fraser Allen from Weta Workshop and Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens wrote the foreword.

Evangeline was pretty busy at San Diego Comic Con this year. She took part in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies panel, alongside Peter Jackson and the Hobbit cast. She was also confirmed for the lead role of Hope Van Dyne in Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man film. Finally, she released several interviews for her children’s book The Squickerwonkers, that has been printed in a new edition this year.

Originally debuting at last year’s convention in a self-published edition, the new edition of Squickerwonkers features a significantly revised version of the story (described by Lilly as “longer and just plain better” than the original). Following her appearance on a panel Friday to discuss the book—intended as the first book in a series—Titan has exclusively released a video of Lilly introducing the concept behind the book, and seeing the new edition be printed, to THR.
