‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Extended Edition Adds 25 Minutes

The extended edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be out on Blu-ray 3D and DVD on 3 November (UK), 4 November (US), 2014. Digital HD will be available in late October.

The extended edition features a 25 minute longer cut that extends individual scenes and over nine hours of special features.

In their press release Warner Brothers say:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition will be available as a 5-disc Blu-ray 3D set featuring the Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray versions of the Extended Edition; and a 5 disc DVD. The Blu-ray 3D includes a 2D digital version of the movie on with UltraViolet.

The nine-plus hours of new special features boasts audio commentary with Peter Jackson, the film’s director/producer/screenwriter, and Philippa Boyens, co-producer/screenwriter, as well as “The Appendices,” a multi-part documentary focusing on various aspects of the film and the Trilogy.   • The Appendices – The Appendices Parts IX and X showcase an immersive multi-part history of the filming of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, covering pre-production in the various departments of the film in the months leading up to the start of principal photography, training, the work done on set and in the world of its digital effects.
