Middle-earth News friend, Abigail Fielder, recently had the chance to attend Charlie Ross’ “One Man Lord of the Rings” show. This unique and highly entertaining show is currently on tour in the UK through October 17. We are honoured to be able to share Abigail’s review with all of you!
“One man in a boiler suit on a stage, there really shouldn’t be anything funny about that but in Charlie Ross’s One man lord of the rings its absolutely hilarious. Charlie plays all the main characters from the trilogy of films and many of the smaller parts as well. Brilliant impressions, physical comedy and often just a well-timed pause and knowing glance add up to an amazing show.
A good knowledge of the films is all that is necessary to understand most of the jokes but Charlie also adds little bits that make more sense to the book readers and fans of Tolkien’s wider collection of works. Slipped in there are other film quotes and references to current events.
I had seen the show once before in 2012 at The Return of the Ring event , this time round with a whole stage for Charlie Ross to make use of, it was even funnier. From the smallest sound effect to the most well-known of epic quotes he uses his voice, microphone, and body to perform them to perfection.
The amount of effort he goes to, falling, crawling and jumping around the stage (his Gollum is spot on), it’s a not a surprise he needs to have breaks to rehydrate and rest a little. The breaks are filled with audience polls and amusing stories so don’t take away from the show.
The most unexpected characters turned out to be the funniest and my sides hurt from laughing almost continuously throughout the show. I would recommend the show to any Lord of the Rings fan looking for a brilliant nerdy night out!”
