(Student Health Center Building, Ground Floor, Room 21)

Tolkien studies and popular culture scholars will discuss the ways in which Peter Jackson’s recently completed film trilogy of The Hobbit relates to, adapts, builds upon, and even substantially diverges from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original work of children’s fiction. Among other topics, panelists will share observations on the film’s inclusion of material from Tolkien’s appendices, the addition of the character Tauriel, treatment of maps and astronomical events, the process of working as a scholar on the film and game scripts as well as background on the history of the rights to the story.

This presentation is free and open to the public.
