Tolkien Reading Day Marquee

Tolkien Reading Day is celebrated on March 25 each year. Organized by the Tolkien Society in 2003, Tolkien Reading Day is an opportunity for fans to promote the life and works of J. R. R. Tolkien by reading their favorite passages from Tolkien’s writings. The Tolkien Society chose March 25 as the date for Tolkien Reading Day because it was the date of the destruction of the One Ring, and therefore the fall of Sauron.

The Tolkien Society chooses a theme each year for Tolkien Reading Day. The theme for 2015 is friendship. Leading up to Tolkien Reading Day, Middle-earth News has been publishing special posts on our social feeds that celebrate Middle-earth friendships. 32. Cindy Moore says:

  41. Abigail Garner says:

I think the friendship between Legolas and Gimli is the most beautiful, rarest and absolutly most amazing friendship one can get. Two beings, from two completely different races, who have disliked each other for a very long time, look past each others differences and become such good friends, to the extent that Legolas took Gimli with him when he sailed to the undying lands.

But my favourit quote would probably be in The two Towers when Frodo is starting to lose hope and give up and then Sam gives his awesome speach:

“It’s like in the great stories Mr Frodo. Full of dark and danger they were. And sometimes you did not want to know the end, because how can the end be happy? How can the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, the shadow. Even darkness must pass. And when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, and meant something, even if you were to small to understand why. But I think Mr Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances in turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.”
Frodo: “Wat are we holding onto, Sam?”
Sam: “That there is some good in this world and it’s worth fighting for.”

  42. “I never thought I’d be fighting side by side with an elf!” Gimli

“What about side by side with a friend?” Legolas

“Aye, I could do that” Gimli

  43. Laura Rasmussen says:

I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you.

  44. Hareem Mirza says:

“I made a promise Mr. Frodo. A promise! ‘Don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee.’ And I don’t mean to. I don’t mean to.”

    -Samwise Gamgee

  45. Ace Manayon says:

“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”

Faramir, in The Two Towers :)

  46. Maria Eugênia Arantes Gonçalves says:

Well, well, I guess this is gonna be more Gimli&Legolas for this post!

” ‘[…] ‘I have made a bargain with my friend that, if all goes well, we will visit Fangorn together – by your leave.’
‘Any Elf that comes with you will be welcome’, said Treebeard.
‘The friend I speak of is not and Elf’, said Legolas; ‘I mean Gimli, Gluin’s son here’. Gimli bowed, and the axe slipped from his belt and clattered on the ground.
‘Hoom, hm! Ah now’, said Treebeard, looking dark-eyed at him. ‘A dwarf and an axe-bearer! Hoom! I have good will to the Elves; but you ask much. This is a strange friendship’. ‘Strange is my seem’, said Legolas; ‘but whime Gimli lives I shall not come to Fangorn alone’.
