BREAKING: ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Series on Amazon Confirmed!

According to Entertainment Weekly, Amazon has greenlit a Lord of the Rings TV adaptation. This confirmation comes a few days after it was rumored that Amazon and Warner Brothers were in the talks of a possible TV adaptation.

Although there is still a lot unknown about what this Amazon Prime Originals TV series will be about and where it might be shot, there are already a few information revealed. So let’s break them up, bit by bit.

  • The TV series won’t be an adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Instead, the TV series will explore events that took place before The Fellowship of the Ring.
  • Amazon’s deal includes the possibility of a spin-off.
  • The Tolkien Estate and Trust, Harper Collins and New Line Cinema, a devision of Warner Brothers, are working together with Amazon on this TV series.

Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins was cited in the Entertainment Weekly article: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings, ”. Galsor also commented that “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

So what does all this mean? Will the events in the TV series take place between the events of The Hobbit and LOTR? Or will the TV series bring events to life long before Bilbo’s adventures? How far back in the past, before the events in LOTR, will this TV series take place? Third age, second age or even during the first age maybe? There are even more unanswered questions once you start thinking about a potential spin-off. Only time will tell what this Amazon Prime Original TV series will be about.

So what do you think about this upcoming TV series? Are you excited that the Tolkien Estate and Trust will be part of it?
