Hobbit Barrel Scene to be Shot in Marlborough this December

For those of you who’ve read The Hobbit the barrel scene certainly is one you’ve sat trying to visualize in your mind but come this December, 13 Dwarves and 1 Hobbit will actually be living it. The 10 day shoot, which we fans will finally get to see in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will take place near Pelorus Bridge and film between December 6 through 16. Crews will begin preparing the location from October 31 on until the filming begins.

Alistair Sowman, the mayor of Marlborough commented on the up-coming shoot saying, “We believe this film will take our scenery to an international audience on a scale beyond our imagination. We know from Matamata’s experience that The Lord of the Rings boosted tourist numbers by tens of thousands over a period of several years…This is going to be an opportunity for the magnificence of Marlborough’s rivers and landscapes to be seen by a global audience and while we cannot quantify the value of that opportunity, it has got to be the ultimate travel promotion…They came to us and we were able to assist them to make this a seamless process. They have ticked all the boxes and it’s full steam ahead. I don’t know if they are calling for extras but I’ll certainly try to watch from a distance.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey premiers December 14 2012 and The Hobbit: There and Back Again hits theaters December 13, 2013.
