Hobbits may choose to skip the shoes and go barefoot, but Jodie Morrison has the rest of the “Hobbit” characters covered. The crew who created all of the footwear for “The Lord of the Rings” has retired, and Morrison was thrilled to travel to New Zealand to be a part of the highly anticipated films.
“They have a workshop on site and I’ve been coming over to them because they’re not shoemakers, but costume prop people. It’s been lots of fun,” she said. She designed and fabricated shoes and boots for wizards, elves, and of course, dwarves. “Lots of dwarves, we’ve done lots and lots of dwarves,” she laughs. “Every stitch is hand stitched… it’s crazy.”
Morrison is the creative force behind Steppin’ Out, her Sydney-based company that has created shoes for stage and film productions, as well as individuals, for thirty years. Her extensive repertoire includes the films “King Kong,” “Moulin Rouge,” and “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
