Hail and well met Foundlings! Or is it Inklers? Free People! It has been some time since we last conversed, but I have great news from the north, I bring you Kylie! Kylie is… well I will let Kylie speak for Kylie…
“I am plainly Kylie, a simple name for complexity at its greatest– I hail from a sun burnt country, filled with red soil, wind-tossed deserts, golden coastlines and…apparently a giant limestone Rock in the center of it. It is the great Southern Land…
But I only live their half the time, most of the time I’m in distant fantasy lands slaying dragons or trying to hunt down Legolas for a marriage proposal, cause I’m single and need a Legolas in my life.
I have lived and breathed Australian hot air for all of my short twenty-two years. I had a childhood filled with the enjoyment and freedom of growing up in a small mining town that was coated a permanent shade of crimson from the steel works (which I think is why my blood is red, otherwise it would be green, like a Vulcan). I was a lonely child, preferring my own company, running down to the playground to partake in fantastical adventures with my imaginary cat friends (making space-ships out of cardboard boxes!) – frightening my poor darling Mother by telling her that I really did, truly believe fairies existed in the backyard. (I’m not crazy, she had me tested.) Though Mother was wary of her daughters imagination, I was blessed with parents who at least fostered it – but they still don’t understand how I ended up with it.
I am the second eldest for four children; an older brother, a younger sister and a little brother – due to my illness I am often left behind by their fast paced lives – but that’s what amazing parents are for…and my cat, she is my best friend!.”
“As a young girl I could neither read nor write due to being dyslexic, it was only when we moved to the big-smoke (city) that I was given a word-processor and began to slowly teach myself how to type. I still cannot spell by hand or in my head, but I have memorized positions of words on the keyboard and that is how I write. And I write a lot – it is my dream to become a fantasy author, having created characters, worlds, legends, myths, creatures and crazy plots ever since I can remember. Imagination is the greatest gift, often I feel that it is the deepest way in which one can connect with the innate part of us that mirrors Creation and the greater Creator. I have a drive to show others imagination, to encourage folk in their own dark times by lighting up their lives with words. To me escaping into a good book isn’t running away, it’s going through heart-ache with a hero and realizing that since they reached the other-side…you can do it too.
If I am not writing and not drawing, you’ll uncover me under a pile of science fiction books and Disney movies. I highly enjoy making plushie dolls. I try to be strong, taking one step, another step, and another while in chronic pain. It can be rough, but that’s mountains for you, they’re rough to climb…”
Kylie told me that Josh and Kas of GrailQuest Books introduced her to My Middle Earth. She went on to tell me why she stuck around… “Everyone is kind, loving and supportive and I have found a cluster of familiar minds; something I have never been able to discover. I enjoy wholesome, deep conversations, and everyone on MM-e seems to have that contemplative mind. It’s a warm, happy place, full of fantasy, family and community. It isn’t good to be alone, and suddenly, I am no longer alone.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself. She also told me about other aspects she enjoyed about the network as a whole… “I love the ME news, it’s like my daily log-in place to discover what is going on – the live radio is a lot of fun, and brings a lot of laughter to my day. There is something magical about this place, and I have an inkling it’ll only get all the more magical.”
Until next time…
