Tolkien Reading Day 2012 – Enter Our Photo Contest to Win The Hobbit for Kindle

If Tolkien fandom has holy days, this is one of the highest. Tolkien Reading Day is fast approaching! March 25 will be here before we know it and My Middle-earth has a few plans up its sleeve to get you in the spirit. First, though, we have received the official press release from the good folks at The Tolkien Society:

75 years of The Hobbit

 In 2012 the Tolkien Society invites you to join in celebrating the 75th anniversary to the publication of The Hobbit

 The purpose of Tolkien Reading Day is to invite everyone to discover and enjoy the books written by J.R.R. Tolkien through talking about them and through activities associated with them.

 This year our theme is 75 Years of The Hobbit, and a set of online resources have been created with ideas and suggestions to help you enjoy this book. There is are 2 ‘overviews’ (“The story of The Hobbit in brief” and a “Chapter-by-Chapter summary”) which offer summaries of different lengths if you are new to the story, and breakdown lists of the main themes, characters, and places in the story. There are also suggestions for all ages, including questions for quizzes (and understanding the story), and activities using the book. The emphasis is on enjoying the story and the Pack is not a comprehensive Study Aid. Pick and choose to suit your interests, and share your thoughts about the story with friends, family, teachers, or students.

 The resources are divided into sections: For smaller children (or anyone not yet familiar with the story); For older children and those more familiar; Other things to do, and More fun on Reading Day

 They include The Hobbit overview, ‘Playing in Middle-earth’ and ‘Runes’ for more ideas.

 The online resources can be supplied in hard copy by contacting the TS Education Officer

Now secondly, and this is where it gets exciting, is that we want you – yes, you, dear reader and lurker and chatter and anyone who loves Tolkien – to submit a photo of yourself reading your favorite Tolkien book. Submit it to the Tolkien Reading Day 2012 group for a chance to win one of FIVE editions of The Hobbit for the Kindle. We’ll be accepting submissions until March 24, so you’ve got two and a half weeks to start snapping those pictures of you sipping your tea and smoking your Longbottom Leaf and delving into your favorite chapter.
