When Mal Harley took his family to visit Hood Aerodrome to look at the planes he had no idea that he was about to meet one of his all-time favourite comedians reports Wairarapa Times -Age He had noticed Peter Jackson and Stephen Fry on the forecourt watching a Tiger Moth flying but was amazed when the plane landed and Billy Connolly got out.
Mr Harley has been a fan of Billy Connolly “for centuries” so was delighted when the comedian posed for photos with him and his partner Andrea Cook. Connolly then autographed Ms Cook’s jeans and Mr Harley’s arm.
Mr Harley was so thrilled he later had the autograph tattooed on his arm as a permanent reminder of the day!
Connolly told Mr Harley that he and Fry were spending the long weekend at Peter Jackson’s Masterton estate .
“He was saying the day before, him, Peter Jackson and Stephen Fry had actually been playing laser strike in the castle,” Mr Harley said, “He’s a really, really nice guy – just how you see on TV … we were just so excited.”
Connolly is playing Dain Ironfoot and Fry the Master of Laketown in the Peter Jackson film The Hobbit.
