Dean O’Gorman’s first photographic exhibition is on at Page Blackie Gallery in Wellington next week. As previously reported, Dean, who plays the dwarf Fili in The Hobbit, has recreated scenes from the Vietnamese war. What we didn’t know then was that some of his models are his fellow actors from The Hobbit. Dean got his friends, including Luke Evans who plays Bard and Adam Brown, who is the dwarf Ori, to pose in war scenes for him.
Dean keeps items from the war in Vietnam in his garage and used these in the photographs.
Asked what it was like to be the other side of the camera Dean said, “Some days I had six people and a smoke machine, some lights and a hired camera – and I got the sweats. I’d turn up and I’d think I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. Then I look at Peter Jackson, who is doing these massive movies and that’s an amazing amount of juggling to do.”
A fascinating interview with Dean is in the Dominion Post.
