Today is Day 2 of Tolkien Feast Week. By now, the hobbits Frodo, Sam, and Pippin have begun their journey, though none of them yet realizes the danger ahead, nor what a long journey they have signed up for.
On this night, the hobbits slept outside, noticed by only a few passing creatures.
A fox passing through the wood on business of his own stopped several minutes and sniffed.
‘Hobbits!’ he thought. ‘Well, what next? I have heard of strange doings in this land, but I have seldom heard of a hobbit sleeping out of doors under a tree. Three of them! There’s something mighty queer behind this.’ He was quite right, but he never found out any more about it.

According to the event information for Tolkien Feast Week posted on the Tolkien Society’s website, the only requirement for today is to sleep outdoors.
Weather permitting, tonight would be a great night for some backyard camping. (The hobbits were practically in their own backyard, having not yet left The Shire.) If you can’t manage that, maybe you could at least treat yourself to an outdoor siesta in honor of the hobbits!
The Middle-earth News team decided this would be a great night for the time honored tradition of making s’mores!
The following recipe is for a single serving of s’mores. But as the name suggests, you might want to have extra ingredients on hand in case you’d like some more!
You will need:
- 1 coat hanger (straightened out to form a skewer)
- 1 large marshmallow
- 1 graham cracker
- 1 chocolate bar
Directions:
- Break graham cracker in half.
- Break chocolate bar into sizes to fit the graham cracker.
- Heat the marshmallow over an open flame* until it turns golden brown. (Alternately, heat marshmallow in microwave for about 10 seconds, or until the marshmallow doubles in size).
- Place the melted marshmallow on top of one graham cracker half, then top with chocolate and other graham cracker piece.
- Allow to cool for a moment before eating.
*The classic way of cooking the marshmallow is over an open flame. Please take the necessary precautions and follow all local laws regarding fire safety.
Variations include using different types of chocolate bars and fancy marshmallows, like those rolled in toasted coconut or even Marshmallow Peeps!
Enjoy your evening in the open air and indulge yourself like a hobbit! We’ll continue with delicious feasts tomorrow and the rest of the week as we celebrate the hobbits and their journey to Bree.
