During the pre-Oscars ceremony, The Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards held in Los Angeles, California this year, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey won an Oscar! It was awarded to Simon Clutterbuck, James Jacobs and Dr. Richard Dorling.
The Scientific and Engineering award was given for their development of the Tissue Physically–Based Character Simulation Framework. “This framework faithfully and robustly simulates the effects of anatomical structures underlying a character’s skin. The resulting dynamic and secondary motions provide a new level of realism to computer–generated creatures,” says Oscars.
This invention helped characters, such as Gollum, come to life. We can’t deny that Gollum looked amazing; a well deserved award indeed!
You can watch their acceptance speech on the Oscars website.
Congratulations to the winners!
