March 25th is a big day for Tolkien fans. Not only is it the day Sauron was defeated and The One Ring destroyed, it is also celebrated the world over as Tolkien Reading Day (TRD).
Back in 2002, The Tolkien Society received an inquiry asking if there existed a day where Tolkien fans celebrated the author and writings. Immediately seeing the need for such a day, The Tolkien Society began the process of turning the idea into a reality. A year later, the first Tolkien Reading Day was celebrated on March 25, 2003.
Now, 10 years later, children and adults alike spend each March 25 immersed in one of Tolkien’s many writings, share with one another their love for his books and stories, and celebrate his life and legacy.
Will this year be the first time you pick up a Tolkien book or story? Have you read them all, but have a favorite in mind for TRD? Are you going to be introducing your kids to the world of Middle-earth? Whatever your Tolkien book reading status is, Middle-earth News wants to hear it!
Simply leave a comment below this post, telling us which Tolkien book or story you have chosen to read for TRD and why. Be creative! The Middle-earth News staff will be reviewing all comments and will pick one lucky winner who will receive a Hobbit Prize Pack: An official Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The Hobbit tote bag, The World of Hobbits book, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Activity Book, and more!
Comments can be submitted now through 12:01 am EST March 25, 2013. After the submission deadline, no other submitted comments will be considered for the Hobbit Prize Pack. On March 25, the winner will be contacted, and shortly after, announced on Middle-earth News.
Other prizes will be randomly given away on the Middle-earth News Facebook and Twitter feeds March 25, so keep an eye out!
And while you’re here, download the 2013 Tolkien Reading Day badge. You can put this up anywhere to celebrate Tolkien Reading Day. Happy Reading!
