The day the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was released, an immense buzzing roared up in all the corners of “The Land of Nerdia” concerning the propriety of Peter Jackson’s interpretation of the trilogy. Orlando Bloom, of course, being as devious and heartwarming in real life as he is in the lands of Middle-earth, where his cunning heart and elvish eyes see things coming miles far-off, had some doubts of his own as well.

Speaking recently with Empire Magazine, Orlando confessed, “I was concerned a little bit, how to justify Legolas’ return. But Peter, Fran [Walsh] and Philippa [Boyens] were very clear about how it would work. It feels authentic, you know?

Orlando’s (pretty fair) concerns were rooted in a fact that the breathtaking Legolas was never really mentioned by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit book. But since his return was successfully materialized, we can assume that Jackson was very convincing in his exposition.

Peter Jackson himself prepares us for a more serious continuation of the journey, as he revealed to the Empire Magazine, “[The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug] has less humour in it for sure. The first film was where we allowed ourselves to try and capture something of the children’s book, but it is really not appropriate to do that anymore. Some pretty serious stuff is going down and it is important that we don’t undercut that now.”

And we can certainly trust him on that, as Jackson even denied a spot on this years Comic Con in the latest Hobbit vlog in order to fully concentrate on the production of the movies to make them, as Jackson put it, “as cool as they could possibly be“.

It is a pretty remarkable thing that’s going on over there.“- Orlando assured us from the very beginning concerning Peter Jackson’s power to wield the magic of aging  Middle-earth backwards.

It seems like only yesterday that some of The Lord Of The Rings cast was returning to the set of The Hobbit, and couldn’t believe their wigs still fit a decade later, and now Legolas and “Gandy” have already bid their last farewells to the production. Meanwhile, as we fans deal with the finalization of it all, lots of exciting things are coming our way, so take heart! For one thing, as if by the tricks of the Tardis, it’s 60 years earlier in Middle-earth and they are still taking the hobbits to Isengard!
