Finally, Tolkien Feast Week has arrived! Welcome and well met, friends! We’re so glad you’ve decided to celebrate Feast Week with us.
“When they had sung many songs, and talked of many things they had done together, they toasted Bilbo’s birthday, and they drank his health and Frodo’s together according to Frodo’s custom. Then they went out for a sniff of air, and glimpse of the stars, and then they went to bed.” – The Fellowship of the Ring, Chapter 3: Three is Company
Upon the first day of Feast Week, we celebrate Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday with a glass of wine and a toast. According to tolkiensociety.org, not much else is required besides going outside to have a look at the stars (or clouds).
For my personal little celebration, I found a lovely bottle of red wine called Lambrusco Reggiano. It’s the perfect wine for an autumn toast, I think – nice and sweet, and certainly warm enough to keep you company as you stroll under the stars.
The Tolkien Society website also encourages “…other celebrations at whim,” on Bilbo’s birthday, which suits me just fine. I, for one, enjoy walking not just under the stars, but on the green earth under the full light of day. There is nothing like a walk to clear the mind and prepare for adventure, after all.
All of our reporters are getting into the spirit this week and we hope you’ll join in and tell us how you’re celebrating, too! Leave us comments below, or find us on Facebook and Twitter. Happy Feast Week!
