The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards today, and it will come as no surprise that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug earned a nomination in the category “Excellence in Fantasy Film.”
Last year, costume designers Ann Maskrey, Richard Taylor, and Bob Buck were nominated in the same category for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but the award ultimately went to Eiko Ishioka for Mirror Mirror.
This year, The Hobbit is up against only two competitors (instead of last year’s four)–Oz: The Great and Powerful and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire–and with new characters like Thranduil, Tauriel, Legolas, Bard, The Master of Laketown, and Alfrid, the Guild will have a hard time not choosing it for the win.
The category for fantasy films was only added in 2005, so when Ngila Dickson won for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, it was in the “Excellence in Period Film” category.
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
