Congratulations! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has been nominated for five Visual Effects Society awards. The nominations for the 12th annual VES Awards were announced in Los Angeles yesterday. The awards recognise ‘outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials and video games and the VFX supervisors, VFX producers and hands-on-the-keys artists who bring this work to life’.
The Hobbit nominations are in the following categories:
Outstanding visual effects in a visual effects-driven feature motion picture: Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, Kevin Sherwood, David Clayton
Outstanding animated character in a live action feature motion picture: Smaug: Eric Reynolds, David Clayton, Myriam Catrin, Guillaume Francois
Outstanding virtual cinematography in a live action figure motion picture: Christian Rivers, Phil Barrenger, Mark Gee, Thelvin Tico Cabezas
Outstanding fx and simulation animation in a live action feature motion picture: Areito Echevarria, Andreas Soderstrom, Ronnie Menahem, Christoph Sprenge
Outstanding compositing in a feature motion picture: Charles Tait, Robin Hollander, Giuseppe Tagliavini, Sean Heuston
Gravity led the way with eight nominations, Pacific Rim got six and The Hobbit and Iron Man 3 tied with five each, reports Hitfix. A full list of nominations can be seen here.
The 12th annual VES Awards ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, on 12 February 2014.
