The Daily Mail is reporting that The Hobbit‘s Richard Armitage is in final discussions to appear in a new production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at London’s Old Vic Theatre. The show is slated to open on June 24, 2014. Miller’s classic play is a dramatized story of the Salem witch trials of 1692-1693, and an allegory of McCarthyism in the United States in the 1950s.
Armitage will portray farmer John Proctor, whose extra-marital affair with Abigail Williams sets off a chain reaction of escalating hysteria when Abigail accuses Proctor of all manner of offenses, including witchcraft, culminating in Proctor’s conviction and execution. 23-year-old actress Samantha Colley has been tapped to play Abigail in the production. South African playwright Yael Farber will direct, and has had several “very exciting” conversations with Armitage about the director’s plans for the production. Armitage’s appearance in the show is not yet finalized, but he is reported to be in “final discussions” about the project.
