The Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto organizes a Tolkien’s Conference in Portugal under the title of Worlds made of Heroes, and invites submissions of 20-minute papers in English (preferably) or Portuguese.
The event will take place on 6-7 November, 2014 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first publication of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Suggested topics include:
- J. R. R. Tolkien’s works and their adaptations: intermedial dynamics
- Theorizing epic fantasy
- The hero’s role in epic fantasy and culture
- Travel literature and the construction of identity
- Ancient-classical origins of epic narratives
- The influence of epic fantasy on other genres
- Epic fantasy and mythology
- Epic fantasy and national identities
- Epic fantasy and social concerns
- Allegory vs reality: is this an issue or a false issue?

Proposals must include:
- Paper’s full title
- Abstract (max. 250 words)
- Name and email address (other contacts if relevant)
- Institutional affiliation
- Short bionote
