This post at Musings of a Tolkienist was written in response to the author’s relative who kept confusing Ents with trees. While Ents may seem like trees (especially in the movies), they are actually. To really understand this distinction, Andrew digs a little deeper to figure out what an Ent really is. (written by fellow Tolkien geek Andrew)
The Hobbit Hole, is a new store dedicated to tabletop gaming that just opened in Chatteris, UK where geeks of all sizes are invited to join in the fun! This sleepy dragon is hand-sculpted out of durable polymer clay and painted with great detail, with a layer of clear-coat enamel on top for extra durability. He sits on top of a filigree ring base with his gold and the Arkenstone (which glows faintly in the dark). The ring is available from Etsy shop Gilded Pixel, along with many other Tolkien themed items! (spotted by Middle-earth News reporter Alice)
Tolkien is mentioned twice on this list of 42 reasons to be proud of Birmingham. The world famous author is ranked at #16, and is the first individual on the list; Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle don’t make the list until #40 and #41, respectively. Curiously, Tolkien’s name is also mentioned in the section on medicine. Did you know that Birmingham surgeon Dr Joseph Sampson Gamgee invented a surgical dressing called Gamgee Tissue, consisting of cotton wool between two layers of gauze, and that supposedly, his name became an inspiration for Tolkien’s character of Sam Gamgee? Were you disappointed that the Misty Mountains song in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey doesn’t include all of the lyrics from The Hobbit novel? The song is often covered, but in most of those covers, you still only get to hear an abridged version of Tolkien’s original song. If you’re searching for the full version, look no further! The gentlemen from Clamavi De Profundis have you covered. (spotted by Middle-earth News reporter Lily)
