Billy Connolly will be appearing as Dáin, Thorin Oakenshield’s cousin, in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. UK Yahoo Movies reported that the actor recently spilled some more details about what fans can expect from Dáin, and about Connolly’s experiences making the film.
Connolly spoke about the complex makeup and costume that gave the character his unique look.
It’s like wearing a Volkswagen. [It took] three hours a day [to apply]. “Can you imagine, having your face stuck on? It’s extraordinary the way I look. My eyebrows have got braids in them, jewellery in my beard, tattoos on my forehead. If you’re standing and you’ve got iron boots on and a big axe, it gives you a certain cachet. You’re not going to say, ‘excuse me, can you tell me the time, please?’
Connolly had to speak some Khuzdul as Dáin. He said that he learned the Dwarvish lines on set just before he had to perform them, and promptly forgot all of it. Speaking about filming the titular battle of the film, the actor revealed that director Peter Jackson helped elicit the reactions he wanted from his cast by piping the sounds of the enemy into the green screen set. “It’s hair-raising. It’s actually quite frightening to do. The sheer noise of it, when they’re all attacking us, noises that are foreign to you.”
Dáin, like the rest of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies sounds utterly epic. No doubt, Peter Jackson is pulling out all the stops for his last on-screen battle in Middle-earth. UK Yahoo’s full story about Billy Connolly can be found here.
