Saviours, Success and Cinema

In 64 days, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the last installment of The Hobbit trilogy, will hit the big screen. With each passing day fans and movie-goers around the world are increasingly excited to see BOTFA. For some, watching BOTFA on the big screen is more than just watching a movie. Many will team up with friends and fellow fans, maybe even dress up, and turn this experience into a social event.

It is believed that movies such as BOTFA, Bond 24 or Star Wars: Episode VIIwill entice people back to the movies” despite the ever rising ticket prices. In the recent past, the entire film industry suffered a decline in box office revenues. Yet, big budget movies seem to make more and more money while independent movies or those with smaller budgets are having a harder time reaching the big screen. In other words, the gap between those movies that break one box office record after another and those that struggle to find any financial support is widening. The two Middle-earth trilogies, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit made £3.37 billion so far (approx. $5.42 billion USD), turning Tolkien into third most successful “author at the box office” as Yahoo.com argues. Only J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series (£4.6 billion) and Ian Flemming and the Bond series (£11.1 billion) are more successful.

As painful as it sometimes is to pay for a ticket these days, I for one cannot help but still go to the movies. The experience of this shared adventure, with popcorn and other delicious snacks, is something I don’t want to miss. These remaining 64 days can’t pass fast enough!
