Congratulations to Sir Ian McKellen who was today given the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his campaign work for gay rights.
Sir Ian, who is known to thousands of Tolkien fans as Gandalf from the films The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, co-founded the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender campaigning group, Stonewall, and is patron of LGBT History Month, Pride London, and The Albert Kennedy Trust, which supports homeless and vulnerable LGBT young people.
In the ceremony at Guildhall, reports City AM, Sir Ian read The Declaration of a Freeman, was presented with a framed parchment certificate dating back to 1237 and was greeted as a “citizen of London” by chamberlain Peter Kayne.
