It’s been five years since we’ve last reported on Etsy shop owner, Cat, and her amazing fantasy-inspired, hand-crafted vegan perfumes. Since that time, her shop, Deep Midnight Perfumes, has blossomed into one of the most sought out shops for professionally crafted perfume oils. If you’re picturing more feminine scents, you’re mistaken! Cat’s creations range from masculine, feminine, to unisex. With numerous new offerings surrounding fans’ favorite stories and myths, I thought it was high time we spotlight Cat’s creativity and dive into some of her most loved scents.
First on the list, for all you Tolkien fans out there, are the Middle-earth inspired scents. Not idly do Cat’s perfumes receive their names. She takes great care in crafting every single scent that goes into making a particular perfume oil. Some of my favorite Tolkien-related perfumes include Evening Star (notes of jasmine, lily of the valley, moss, ferns, soft musk, herbs), Lady of Light (notes of orange blossom, vetiver, oakmoss, honey, azalea, and woods), and House of Healing (wild iris, linden blossoms, green trees, grasses, fallen oaks leaves, and sweet morning dewdrops).
With such flora notes, Evening Star is my go-to spring perfume. It is the complete combination of that first warm spring day, where the sun shines just a tad warmer, causing the flowers to bud and the birds to sing. Lady of light is in every way, what I imagine a high elf addressing eight companions and one ring bearer to smell like; regal, wise, and beautiful. I was very excited to smell House of Healing and was not disappointed when I did. It is full of all good, green things, and immediately transported me to that chapter in Tolkien’s books.
Of course, there are other favorites I love that run outside the realms of Middle-earth. Nessie is a brilliant combination of deep waters, highland heather, green aquatics, forest greens, wormwood, and mist. It’s like wearing a wee bit of Scotland on you. So, of course, I wear it a lot. I’m a big fan of hiking, and lately, I’ve taken to wearing Crone’s Woods when I venture out on a trail. Described as a unisex scent, it consists of cedarwood, cinnamon bark, firewood, clove, wood honey, guggal incense, pimento, wengue wood, rosewood, vetiver, and dark amber, not to mention a little touch of dry leaves, cinnamon leaf, dark oak, benzoin, nutmeg and dark evening florals.
Above all the rest, however, would have to be Skellig. Like every perfume Cat hand-crafts, there’s a story behind the name and the combination of scents that go into making it. This particular perfume is made up of stone, ocean water, parchment and vellum, earth, old wood, moss, driftwood, herbal notes, ink notes, and grounded in a base of light, dry amber. It encompasses every aspect of the monastery found on Skellig Michael, a tiny island off the southwestern coast of Ireland.
One thing I’ve learned after wearing many of Cat’s perfumes is, not all scents smell the same on everyone, and not everyone likes the same scents. That’s why I love the fact that you don’t have to order a large vial of perfume if you’re unsure how it will smell on you, and whether you’ll like it. The sample packs she offers in the store are a perfect way to get a feel for the scents that really draw you to your happy place. Once you do find your favorite, she gives away a free sample with each large vial you order. It’s the perfect way to take a new scent for a test run.
Fantastic perfumes aside, Cat is truly a wonderful shop owner, and it’s been a joy to get to know her more. Out of the thousands of Etsy shops, hers is one of the few I have come to enjoy and regularly visit. Do stop by her shop and check out the wonderful artisan perfumes she has created, and tell her I said mae govannen, mellon nin!
