Last year the Bodleian Library in Oxford was home to an exhibit called “Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth” and like the name suggests, it’s all about the professor himself, J.R.R. Tolkien. Now that same exhibit will be coming to New York later this month at The Morgan Library & Museum! From what I’ve read, people have had only amazing things to say about the Oxford exhibition so I have very high hopes.
“Drawn from the collections of the Tolkien Archive at the Bodleian Library (Oxford), Marquette University Libraries (Milwaukee), the Morgan, and private lenders, the exhibition will include family photographs and memorabilia, Tolkien’s original illustrations, maps, draft manuscripts, and designs related to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.” (x)
We’ll be there for The Morgan’s Press Preview the day before it officially opens to the public and we can’t wait! I can already predict that I’ll be visiting the museum multiple times this winter and spring. After all, it’ll be the most extensive collection of Tolkien material in several generations! If that’s not enough to interest you I don’t know what will.
So if you’re able to make it to NYC at any point from January 25 to May 12, make sure to go to The Morgan. Find more information here.
If you can’t get to The Morgan, definitely consider buying what is essentially the book version of the exhibition, Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth. A must-have for all Tolkien fans!
“This book brings together the largest collection of original Tolkien material ever assembled in a single volume. Drawing on the archives of the Tolkien collections at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, and Marquette University, Milwaukee, as well as private collections, this exquisitely produced catalogue draws together the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien – scholarly, literary, creative and domestic – offering a rich and detailed understanding and appreciation of this extraordinary author.” (x)
