I remember the exact moment in January 2011 when I sat down at the computer and decided to start a blog about Tolkien-related news. One that didn’t cover only news of the new Hobbit films we were hearing whispers about at the time, but a site that delved into the amazing talents of authors, artists, musicians, craftsmen, gamers, actors, and fans that have been inspired by the Professor’s books. Nearly nine years later, what was once a small blog, has grown into a much beloved news site that has been kept alive by a group of amazing women willing to volunteer their time towards keeping it running.
Within those years, my dream for the site reached far beyond what I could have ever imagined. We connected with fans, went to cons and premieres, met and interviewed the Hobbit cast, and hosted events, podcasts, and radio shows. However, during that same time, my own personal life saw quite a few changes as well. Those changes, as life has a tendency to do, have effected the time I have been able to put into running the website. As such, I have made the decision to pass the torch of Executive Director on to Valdis Longbeard, who has been acting as my Assistant Director and doing a fabulous job of it. Val’s passion for Tolkien’s work and for Middle-earth News has been instrumental in keeping the site alive, and I am confident it’s future is in good hands going forward.
As for me, I will still be around (sorry, you can’t get rid of me that easily), but my position over the site will be seen as it’s Founder. The change will allow me to spend more time with my family, which has always been and will be priority number one for Middle-earth News Staff. Yet, at the same time, fans of the site and the staff who run it, are and will always be considered family to me.
To all those who have visited the site over the years while I acted as it’s Executive Director, and for those who will continue to do so now that Val is taking over the position, I thank you. Your support and friendship speaks of just how amazing Tolkien fans are and why our fandom community remains one of the most welcoming and fun to be a part of.
Without further ado, please give a warm Shire welcoming to the new Middle-earth News’ new Executive Director, Valdis Longbeard!
