In true hobbit fashion, the Tolkien folk of Dragon Con know how to throw a good party. Fan favorite events, “An Evening in Bree” and “Hobbit Drinking Songs” were again among the must-do events at Dragon Con 2022.
“An Evening in Bree” is a staple of Friday evening fun for the High Fantasy Track. Hosted by our excellent and admirable friends from TheOneRing.net, the celebration included music from three bands and the ever-popular costume contest. The evening got started in fine fashion with a set from The Brobdingnagian Bards.
Now that everyone was in an excellent partying mood, the program continued with the Costume Contest. This year’s competition was judged by celebrity guests John Howe and Leith McPherson, and none other than King Thranduil (expert cosplayer Josh Duart). The contestants showed some formidable cosplay chops, and the competition was fierce. Yours truly was in the competition, so I don’t have many photos to share. Here is a report on the event at TheOneRing.net where you can see the photos of the top winners in each category. I was deeply honored to have been chosen as Runner Up in the Book Inspired category for my Varda cosplay.
While the judges deliberated the results of the costume contest, we were entertained by the Elf Choir, back again after the pandemic hiatus. The choir sounded terrific! It was great to see so many people participating. After the well-earned contest prizes were awarded, the music and dancing resumed with Beth Patterson. The evening rounded our with music by LandLoch’d.
Sunday evening at Dragon Con wouldn’t be complete without a few rousing “Hobbit Drinking Songs” with the Brobdingnagian Bards, Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee. The packed room (thankfully a much larger room this year) had a great time singing along and some people got up and danced, and a grand time was had by all. I have to admit that this show is always a highlight of my con experience. Thank you to the Bards for an always delightful experience.
