Dragon Con Tolkien content has always had a lot of variety, with panels that appeal to many different fans. Dragon Con 2022 was no exception, with several panels for Tolkien fans. Be sure to check out our other posts about Rings of Power panels and “music and merriment”.
Leading off the first full day of content, “Gandalf vs Sauron: Angels at War” took a deep dive into the Ages-long history between these two pivotal Maiar. Panelists Constance Wagner, Jim Wert, and Laura Grabowski had a great discussion with questions from a standing-room-only crowd.
“Sing with the Elf Choir” gives fans a chance to learn a couple specially arranged songs related to the High Fantasy track. The Elf Choir is a great chance to come together with other fans and make some music. Led by Kathleen Dallin, the choir performs the rehearsed songs later during “An Evening in Bree”. As with other Tolkien-themed events and panels, the large room is filled with participants.
A Saturday afternoon panel discussed what we know about the upcoming 2024 anime film from director Kenji Kamiyama, The War of the Rohirrim. Panelists Kirsten Cairns, Dyrk Ashton, Shane McInnis, and Jim Wert talked about the source material (the story of Helm Hammerhand) and what we know about casting and production. They also shared a very special video message from Sir Richard Taylor and Philippa Boyens.
Even an early Sunday morning hour didn’t diminish attendees’ enthusiasm for all things Tolkien. “Deep Places of the World: Journeys in the Underworlds of Middle-earth” took a packed room of fans on an exploration of some of the underground realms of journeys of transformation in Tolkien. Panelists Alicia Fox-Lenz, Constance Wagner, Dyrk Ashton, Jim Wert, and Laura Grabowski walked the audience through places such as the Halls of Mandos, The Paths of the Dead, the Mines of Moria, and the Cracks of Doom.
There are so many things to explore in Tolkien’s world! What panels might you like to see at Dragon Con?
