The Tolkien Society is pleased to announce that the full-line of artists at The Return of the Ring’s art exhibition will include Ted Nasmith, Cor Blok, Anke Eissmann, Jay Johnstone, Jenny Dolfen, Ruth Lacon, Tor Fauskanger, Sue Wookey, and Maike ‘Lúthien’ Dulk, alongside LEGO and a huge diorama of the Battle of Pelennor Fields. This is one of the largest Tolkien exhibitions ever to have taken place which includes many world-renowned artists over hundreds of metres of wall-space.
Cor Blok has achieved notoriety in recent years with the most recent Tolkien Calendars and his book A Tolkien Tapestry, whilst Ted Nasmith is already very well-known to Tolkien fans through his illustrated Silmarillion. Anke Eissmann creates some beautiful watercolours and ink drawings, whilst Ruth Lacon makes use of bold colours and forms in her very unique artwork. The sheer amount and range of artwork means there will be something here for everyone and attendees will have the chance to look at some artists’ interpretation of scenes from The Hobbit before Sir Peter Jackson’s epic film comes out later this year. You can view a sample of their artwork by going here: Return of the Ring – Art Show.
The Return of the Ring takes place at Loughborough University, England on 16th-20th August 2012 with the art show running over the entire duration of the weekend. The Return of the Ring celebrates the forthcoming films and 75 years of The Hobbit. It is the follow-up to Tolkien 2005 that commemorated 50 years of The Lord of the Rings and which was recently described by Ring*Con founder Marcel Bülles as “probably the best Tolkien-related event in history.“
This huge roster of artists continues to expand the impressive line-up of guests that includes: author and Tolkien’s grandson Michael Tolkien; performer of ‘One Man LOTR’ Charlie Ross; authors and academics Brian Sibley, Tom Shippey, Verlyn Flieger, Colin Duriez, John Garth, and Corey Olsen; directors of Born of Hope and The Hunt for Gollum Kate Madison and Chris Bouchard; and French Middle-earth re-enactment society The Company of the Green Dragon. To view all our guests, including all artists, please go to: Return of the Ring – Guests.
Shaun Gunner, Tolkien Society trustee, said: “The size of this exhibition is unprecedented – we are absolutely ecstatic to have gathered so many artists in one place. This is a one-off opportunity to see some of the Tolkien community’s most favoured and most famous art. I am particularly excited to see the Byzantine-esque Tolkien iconography by Jay Johnstone and Jenny Dolfen’s wonderful watercolours. It really is worth coming to The Return of the Ring just for this. I would urge every Tolkien fan in the United Kingdom to make the trip to Loughborough in two weeks’ time!“
