Turns out it’s true! Scroll to the bottom for update!
If you’re a fan of Stephen Colbert, then you’ve probably heard him profess his love of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings numerous times on The Colbert Report. His passion is so well-known that actor Viggo Mortensen gave the television host a set of chocolates shaped like various characters from the films. In addition to that, he owns a replica of Aragorn’s sword, Anduril, which fans have occasionally caught a glimpse of.
Playboy recently chatted with Colbert, who revealed that he had visited the set of The Hobbit films, where director Peter Jackson showed him 25-minute cut of the movie.
“Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year. I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I’m a big fan of the films.”
Naturally, this has led to speculation regarding a possible cameo. Colbert’s only response was that it is something that “could be.”
Here’s hoping that Stephen will make it into The Hobbit films!
October 20 UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter confirms that he will have a cameo in the second or third film of The Hobbit trilogy.
